MFF to Screen Women-Centric Films in Berlin During Petrolettes Weekend

June 30, 2016

The Motorcycle Film Festival (MFF) is excited to announce that we are teaming up with Irene Kotnik of The Curves MC to screen women-centric films of the MFF during the Petrolettes camp-out weekend in Berlin, Germany from 29-31 July.

Petrolettes is a ladies-only camping weekend, celebrating women and motorcycles and will be chock-full of racing, music, and films! Created and managed by Irene Kotnik and The Curves MC, the weekend promises to be a fantastic time! The full schedule of events for the weekend can be found below or on the Petrolettes website.

Irene is no stranger to motorcycles or film as she co-founded The Curves MC, a women’s moto group in Berlin, and has held various positions within the film community. She has a passion for uniting women in gasoline culture and because of that passion, is organizing the first annual Petrolettes with The Curves. She is also an MFF Judge this year, so when she asked us if we wanted to participate, we jumped at the chance!

Because Petrolettes is a ladies weekend, we will be screening films that feature and/or were filmed by women. The MFF is looking to continue moving the discussion forward about how and where women fit into motorcycles and art and to also highlight the women behind the scenes of both the film and motorcycle communities – with Petrolettes offering a perfect opportunity to do so.

3rd annual 2015 Trailer by Daniel Rintz

May 31, 2015

We are thrilled to present the official trailer for the 3rd annual MFF 2015 by filmmaker Daniel Rintz. Daniel won “Best Of Festival” at the 2nd annual MFF with his film “Somewhere Else Tomorrow“. With the support of Honda, the MFF was able to fund Daniel in filming a trailer for this year’s festival. No small feat as he is still on the road with limited means.

It was a such a great experience to work with such a talented filmmaker and get updates like these throughout the process.

April Email update from Guatemala:

We’ve captured the last missing shots for the trailer yesterday. The weather wasn’t cooperating until then, but now we’re very close getting it finished.

The other day got almost killed filming. We shot footage on a very nice narrow and windy road; it was newly paved. Several cars stopped and told us to “get lost”. Finally when one of them threatened to “make a phone call” we immediately left the scene. We talked to some local friends about it the next day and found out this road was only buildt and paved so they could extract Gold from the mountains in the region more easily. The people who threatened us were indigenous and do not in the least profit from the natural resources. Instead their kids are born blind, woman get sterile, and diseases are through the roof, only because they depend on the water of the land, which is now polluted because of the mining. The mining company is – of course – American. The corrupt Guatemalan government made a quick buck by selling the land to greedy corporations. We look like Gringos to the indigenous and they immediately hated our guts for obvious reasons. There was no explaining our way out of it. But we acted in time and got out.

Yesterday we found a spot where there were no miners for filming the “campsite scene,” but it was hairy to get to. Single track on the heavy bikes… We filmed till sunset and getting down in the dark I almost threw my whale of a bike down the cliff.

But it’s all good fun and adventure and everybody loved working on it.” – Daniel Rintz

FILMMAKER INTERVIEW: TRUEN PENCE

April 28, 2014

Filmmaker: Truen Pence

Film: The Build

1st Annual MFF 2013: Winner Short Film

Q: What’s the name of your film in the MFF?

A: The Build

Q: What’s it about?

A: Three custom motorcycle builders in Portland, Oregon discuss how life fits in with their obsession of building and riding bikes

Q: What inspired you to make this movie?

A: I love to ride and am continually fascinated by the people and culture surrounding bikes. I build a bike a few years ago and was fascinated by how simple it was and took me back to feeling like I was a kid again. I wanted to explore this subject further and luckily, we live in a place where building unique bikes is celebrated. Aside from the bikes, however; were the builders whose personalities all inspired me. Their personalities, drive and overall philosophy on life seemed to be unique and different enough that they all seemed to resonate with me and I thought they could stand alone as their own pieces. Luckily all three of them were game and willing to talk, ride, and wrench in front of the camera.

Q: How did you find the MMF?  Have you made any other films, and if so, is there a common theme throughout your films?

A: Yes and no. Most are commercial and documentary in nature but hopefully my theme is just authenticity. Stupid word but if there is a better way to say “capturing the root of the subject without a lot of other bullshit getting in the way,” that is the word I’m looking for.

Q: Do you ride a motorcycle?  If so, tell yes a little about what you ride, and why?

A: I like the combination of craft and adventure and Moto films seem to capture that sense of adventure better than some other mediums. There is that perfect balance between machine and nature. It’s not just about the adventure, you have to respect the machine as well. There is something to be said for the craft and laborious pursuit that is involved in the building or maintenance of a bike as well.

Q: Have you had a chance to attend the MMF yet?

A: Not yet but want to make it to the next. Bring it out West!

Q: Possibly impossible questions:  Favorite bike movie?

A: I recently watched the Burt Munro documentary, “Offerings to the God of Speed” for the first time and was blown away at that. We all know the story from World’s Fastest Indian but that dude was a legit thrill seeker and fascinating craftsman. It was good to hear the story through his own words. The cinematography on it is pretty solid for the time as well. If you haven’t seen it, find a copy of it and check it out.

Q: What’s next for you as a filmmaker?

A: I’m fortunate to be able to make films that excite me and continue to explore fascinating content here at Instrument. We recently released a short film and website around the Oregon Coast called “This Place,” http://thisplacejournal.com/ that you can check out if you haven’t experienced it for yourself.

FILMMAKER INTERVIEW: Kadshah Nagibe

January 30, 2014

Filmmaker: Kadshah Nagibe

Film: I Ride A Triumph, 1st annual MFF Short Film Official Selection, 2013

Q: What’s the film about, and what inspired you to make it?

A: Andy Shaw’s love of riding and his custom 2009 Triumph Thruxton motorcycle. Er…I don’t remember (what inspired me), but I’ve been shooting people on two wheeler’s for a long time I just enjoy doing it.

Q: Have you made any other films, and If so, is there a common theme throughout your films?

A: I’m an independent filmmaker living in NYC. I’ve made one other motorcycle short called “The Emblem” which can be viewed HERE and I also made a few short scooter videos which can be viewed on my Youtube page.

Q: Do you ride a motorcycle?

A: Yes all year unless it snows. The two times I went down on my bike was while riding in the snow. I’ve had two Triumph Bonneville bikes, a 2003 and a 2007. The crank shaft on the first bike went kaput and I replaced it with the 07 which runs great. I’ve always wanted to own a Triumph. I would love to have a vintage bike but I don’t have a garage to store it and I wouldn’t want to leave it out on the street. I also love the look of the old the Norton, Victory and Indian bikes.

Q: As a filmmaker, what about The MFF and motorcycle films in general speaks to you?

A: I love what you guys are doing. It’s about time someone stepped forward to do this.

Q:  Have you had a chance to attend the MFF yet?

A: Yes my film was in the 2013 MFF line-up thank you for screening it.

Q: What’s next for you as a filmmaker?

A: Well I have an ambitious idea for a motorcycle film in 2014 but that will depend on if I can get a crew together to help me out I’ll see.
