MEET THE JUDGES: ULTAN GUILFOYLE

Author of Spoon and 1000 Design Classics

Judge- Ultan GuilfoyleUltan Guilfoyle quintessentially combines motorcycles, art, and film. Ultan was co-curator, with his friend Prof. Charles Falco, of the Guggenheim Museum’s groundbreaking, blockbuster exhibition The Art of the Motorcycle. One of the best attended museum exhibitions…ever, The Art of the Motorcyclehas been credited with reintroducing motorcycles to the general public as beautiful objects of design, machines with intrinsic artistic qualities ridden, and works to be collected by connoisseurs.

Guilfoyle began his film-making career at the BBC in London. His award-winning films have been shown on PBS, HBO and Bravo in the US, and BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the UK. Working with the late director Sydney Pollack, Guilfoyle produced the film Sketches of Frank Gehry, which was an Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. It also featured at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and was released worldwide by Sony Pictures Classics. Incidentally, Frank Gehry was the exhibition designer forThe Art of the Motorcycle exhibitions.

When not making films, Guilfoyle writes about design and architecture. Two books co-written by Guilfoyle for Phaidon Press, Spoon and 1000 Design Classics, were best-selling design books and remain in print.
